C599: "Indians" vs. Progress in Splash! Fall 2010 (Oct. 02, 2010)
In this class we will be looking at identity concepts in Latin America and how nation-building projects have stressed a particular ethnic, racial, and linguistic society at the expense of other groups within a country. This has changed how people in countries like Mexico see themselves and others, which has had positive, negative, and ambivalent effects in society, particularly for indigenous people. Through classroom activities, we will question what we already know or think we know about others and consider what if feels like or means to be an outsider of society.
