C477: American Sign Language and Deaf Culture in Splash! Fall 2009 (Oct. 03, 2009)
You’re walking down the street and thinking without a soundtrack. No sirens, no car horns, no “Look out!” There are visuals, gestures and your eyes are working to take everything in. It's an interesting hypothetical. Now, let's push farther: what is Deaf life like in America? This class will provide an introduction to American Sign Language and Deaf culture, history, customs, and contemporary issues. How do we say “Hello”, “Thank you”, “ugly man” and “punk” in American Sign Language? Why aren’t Deaf people offended by comments about their weight and appearance? What are some Deaf opinions about the hearing world? Is Deafness a disability?
