Brief Biographical Sketch:
I'm a third year student at UChicago majoring in English and Near Eastern Language and Culture (with a focus in Arabic). I am a first generation American, as my parents are Jewish Russian immigrants from the former Soviet Union, and I grew up watching Russian animated films and shorts. I speak Russian, some Spanish, and hope to improve my Arabic, though at this point I have only taken one year. The course will trace animation in the Soviet Union from the 1920s until the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, mixing short screenings of various animated Russian films with Soviet history and history of animation around the world during that time.
