A1241: You Say You Want A Revolution: An Historical Look at Music Propelling Politics in Splash! Fall 2013 (Oct. 05, 2013)
Oh Picket lines and picket signs/ Don't punish me with brutality/ Talk to me so you can see/ What's going on – from What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye (1971) From the Rolling Stones to Kendrick Lamar, music reflects and shapes the political structure from which it originates. We'll analyze lyrics, songs, and artists from an anthropological viewpoint. We'll also discuss the idea of a 'song' dynamically—as a function of artist, structure, lyrics, and social context—more than just as a ‘rad’ mp3.
