Brief Biographical Sketch:
Over the course of my UChicago education, I have engaged heavily in fashion, architectural and graphic design while studying Latin American Architecture. I have both participated in and led the Designer Boot Camp program through MODA (UChicago's fashion organization) in recent years, and all of my work can be seen online at alicialfrench.weebly.com. I hope to sew and create clothing for the rest of my life as a hobby, but I want to integrate the lessons that I have learned while designing in recent years into all aspects of my life. Most recently, I won an award from the Uncommon Fund to host an event called "Edible Invertebrates: Intersecting with Insects," which would promote entomophagy (the eating of bugs) amongst UChicago students--this is an embodiment of my love for sustainable practices that runs concurrent to my design aesthetic. Throughout this two-hour course, students will learn about the development of fashion from its roots in 1700s France to the present day, with a focus on womenswear. Particular emphasis will be placed on the most famous contributions to the fashion industry from innovators such as Charles Worth, Madeline Vionnet, Coco Chanel, Elsa Schiaparelli, Cristobal Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent, and Rei Kawakubo, amongst others. At the end of the lecture, students will be asked to showcase their own designs as director of the fashion house of their choice, creating a final outfit with non-traditional materials.
