Women are on the rise! Are men losing ground? Who is a feminist anyways? This class will consider the current status of women. We will explore issues surrounding jobs and income, marriage, and education. What does it mean that women earning more money than ever but on average earning 20 cents less than men? Why are fewer women getting married and why are women doing so well in schools? This class is open to both genders and will be a blend of student discussion and teacher presentation.
A1256: Breadwinners: The Rise of Women in Cascade! Fall 2013 (Oct. 22, 2013)
Forty years ago, a major car manufacturer did not have a female restroom on the engineering floor because there were no women. Now, an entire engineering division is female. What has changed? What has yet to change? And what are some of the results of those changes? In this class, we will look at the changing role of women in America and around the world. For example, we will talk about the reasons fewer women are getting married and the effects of women becoming primary breadwinners but continuing to earn only 3/4th of what men earn.

Most of us grow up wanting to get married. But fewer people are getting married. Why? What are the effects of this trend? What does this mean for you? We will consider some of the following topics: Why do people get married, how has marriage changed through history, who is no longer getting married, and why people are not getting married. We will consider the subject through economics, religion, and personal experience.

The dictionary defines an entrepreneur as “a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk.” What does this definition mean in every day life? Who are entrepreneurs? What makes an entrepreneur different from an inventor or a small business owner? These are questions we’ll seek to answer as well as think what it takes to become an entrepreneur.
