S1816: Geometry of our universe
Difficulty: **

We see three directions, up/ down, east/west, north/south. Einstein realized that time acts like a 4th direction, which leads to extremely bizarre but observed phenomena. If we curve this 4 dimensional space we move in, we explain gravity. We will learn about this spacetime we live in using simple geometry, which will lead us to understand blackholes and the big bang.

Prerequisites
A willingness to use your imagination.

S1810: Introduction to Logic for Math and Philosophy
Difficulty: **
Teachers: Steve Kelly

Logic is the fiber that holds together any argument be it philosophical or mathematical. It allows us to provide a formal way to address the truth of statements like "If it rains, I will get wet," which actually extremely powerful. In fact, Kurt Godel famously used it to attempt to prove the existence of a God. Though this proof is too advanced for one 50 minute lecture we will attempt to lay the groundwork that Godel's proof is based off of. In this lecture we will go over the basic rules of logic including propositional formulas, truth tables, and logical equivalence. We will then try and apply these concepts to real world arguments and attempt to logically disprove an argument for determinism.

No prior experience is expected or required.

Prerequisites
None.

S1817: Ion Channels and Sensation
Difficulty: **
Teachers: Andrew Molina

How do cells feel, taste, and see the physical world around them? In this class, we will explore the strange and beautiful world of ion channels, membrane proteins that respond to physical and chemical stimuli in their environment and trigger massive electrical events in the cell.

Our discussion will cover general principles of biological sensation on macromolecular and cellular length scales, with several specific examples from human sensory systems.

Prerequisites
A basic familiarity with physical concepts such as voltage and pH is helpful.
